The New Works Festival started off with a bang! We had a completely packed house for the first staged reading in our Salon Series Play-Off, AJ Baker’s THE ANNIVERSARY EFFECT. Thank you to everyone who came out for this wonderful Festival Opening Night, and kudos to the brilliant all-Equity ensemble cast — Marissa Keltie, Chad Deverman, Sally Dana, Johnny Flanagan, Monique Hafen and Louis Parnell — and director, Mary Powelson. It was an evening that made all of us at 3Girls Theatre proud.

We had such a terrific conversation with special guests, the SF Chronicle’s Rob Hurwitt, SF Examiner’s Jean Schiffman and SF Weekly’s Lily Janiak. All three critics generously shared their views with our rapt audience of playwrights on topics ranging from “what’s the point of writing a review” to “should critics be concerned about revealing their personal biases” to “how do you choose which new works to review.” The discussion was frank and engaging– and also extremely fun. One thing was clear in the end: we all share a love for theater and a desire to turn as many new audience members on to the excitement of seeing new work as possible. Our second staged reading of the Salon Series Play-Off was the chamber musical comedy by Patricia Milton and Caroline Altman, MOMENTS OF TRUTH. The audience was truly (!) delighted by the beautiful voices of cast members Caroline Altman, Stephanie Prentice, John Patrick Moore and Steve Rhyne.

Our third staged reading of the Salon Series Play-Off was Lee Brady’s “comedy of bad manners,” HENRIETTA ENGLISH, directed by Andrea Gordon. Executive Producer Carol Fregly joined an enthusiastic audience to follow Henrietta’s adventures via the terrific performances of cast members Amber Crane, Howard Johnson, Jr*., Maureen Coyne, Kim Richards*, Paul Stout, Charles Dean*, Lorri Holt*, Dennis McIntyre*.

A sold-out house had a rollicking good time at the debut performance of LEZ WRITES!, an evening of short, funny pieces by lesbian writers and performers curated by Margery Kreitman. The show included original pieces by Margery and J. Anthea, Erin Blackwell, L. Zephyr, Zoe Burkowski, Zona Sage, Bev Jo, Charlotte Higgins, Maureen Bogues and Molly Kelly.

The festival ended with a fascinating evening of theater, discussion and celebration honoring our women veterans. The powerful new play LOW HANGING FRUIT by Robin Bradford had a staged reading followed by a discussion of the issues raised by the play with members of the cast and women veterans from our collaborating organization, Swords to Plowshares. Before the reading, festival goers were invited to join us for hors d’oeuvres and bubbly at a reception honoring the artists who contributed work reflecting the experience of their military service to our annual 3GT Art Show.
