ABOUT THE SOUTHERN LIGHTS CREATIVE TEAM

Lee Brady

About the Playwright
Lee Brady is the consummate theatre professional whose resume could take up 10 pages on its own: for nearly fifty years she’s been writing, acting, teaching, producing, and directing . . . but she considers herself to be first and foremost, a playwright. Lee is a resident playwright/literary director for the Fearless Minds Production Company in Carmel Valley, California (their first annual Playwrights Festival was held in February 2011); a founder of Fresh New Works in San Francisco; an Adjunct Professor at Monterey Peninsula College; a Theatre Critic for the Pacific Sun Newspaper and has reviewed for the Scotsman in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Her work has been produced in Edinburgh, Scotland and San Jose, Costa Rica, as well as in regional theatre in the Midwest, South, Southwest and several California cities. Among many others, she has won awards for her plays HOME FROM THE WEDDING and SOUTHERN LIGHTS. In 2011 alone, a collection of her plays, BRADY’S SHORTS, was produced in a sold-out production at the Cherry Center for the Arts, Carmel, California and her short play JANICE & SHELLEY & JO was produced by 3GT at the SF Fringe Festival. Her double-bill SOUTHERN EXPOSURE was staged at the Cherry Center in Carmel in 2011, as well as at SF Playhouse in January 2012 as a co-production of 3GT and the Dramatists’ Guild. In 2012 her one-person musical drama WHAT ABOUT BEN?—previously a recipient of an International Playwriting Award in Costa Rica—was seen in an all-new production at 3GT’s inaugural Celebration Of Women’s History Month. In December 2011, Lee was honored for her achievements as a “Remarkable Woman” of the theatre in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Monterey’s “REMARKABLE WOMEN SERIES.” In 2018, 3GT’s Brady Fellow program was named for Lee in grateful appreciation for her inspirational 50-year career as an innovative and playwright, teacher and al-around theatre guru.

Andrea Gordon

About the Director
Associate Artist and 3GT Legacy Member Andrea Gordon has been directing and producing theater on the West coast since 1983. She was resident director at Theater Artists of Marin, the One Act Theatre Company, Artistic Director for Tour de Force Theatre Company, and the last incarnation of the Eureka Theatre (along with Benny Sato Ambush and Lane Nishikawa). Her 78 productions have garnered 19 BATTC awards and several Dean Goodman Dramalogue awards for Direction and Production.

She has directed and taught at Berkeley Rep’s apprentice program, ACT’s conservatory reading program, Marin Theatre Company, The Magic Theatre, the Eureka Theatre, Berkeley Stage, Asian American Theatre Company, San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, the Fringe Festival and many other places up and down the California Coast, NYC and Chicago. She attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, The High School for Performing Arts NYC, took her BA in Dramatic Writing at The College of Creative Studies U.C.S.B, and her MA in Theater Direction from SFSU. She has taught acting, dramaturgy, dramatic literature and voice and diction at U.C.S.B., St. Mary’s College, the London School of Dramatic Arts, Suisun Valley College, City College of San Francisco and San Francisco’s New College, among others. And, because the cardinal rule of theater is to never give up your day job, she is the Top-Producing Realtor Company Wide at Red Oak Realty in Berkeley and Oakland. Andrea directed 3GT’s first full production (Lee Brady’s Janice & Shelley & Jo at the Fringe in 2011), as well as numerous Salon Series readings over the years. In 2018, she is directing Brady’s SOUTHERN LIGHTS at Z Below.

An Interview with Lee Brady

Lee discusses Southern Lights, her fondness for radio drama, and a love of storytelling which began while she was growing up in Seminole, Oklahoma.

MORE ABOUT THE PLAY

Brady came up with the original idea for Southern Lights while working in and with a small theatre company called Tour de Force (also with current director, Andrea Gordon), and decided to write a one-act for two actors. Based on a Greek myth, it told the story of “a young man who was on the wrong path, trying to be someone else, when one of the Muses—probably Calliope” she says, “came down from Mt Olympus to help, as goddesses did that in the old stories. She did change him, but fell in love despite knowing that she would have to leave when her mission was accomplished.”
