The Terwilliger Family and the Magic Box by Lee Brady
“An Exercise in Nostalgia” and “A Christmas Gift to the Community,” are apt descriptions of playwright Lee Brady’s “The Terwilliger Family and the Magic Box,” presented as a reading on Tuesday, December 13th at Z Space Below in San Francisco.
This one act comedy takes place during the great depression in Pittsville, Arkansas –where times are hard. Hard times don’t stop the Terwilligers from celebrating and sharing their fun on a weekly radio show. Young Shirley Jean and Tommy Jack, their loving parents Tom and Louise (plus her beautiful young sister, Rose), and The Radio (read by Dennis McIntyre) all look forward to better times. Not so Old Grandma who hates the new fangled box that’s brought the outside world to Pittsville and undermined her rule. The action builds when the family wins a lottery that gives the family members one wish each.
The play, “a comedy for serious children” is free, gives audiences an entertaining break from the holiday rush and has appeal for all ages.
“The Terwilliger Family and the Magic Box” is the first episode in a radio serial featuring this All-American Family. More episodes can be expected in the Spring of 2017.
